Meet Smokey. Smokey was found in the San Fernando Valley by one of our volunteers while transporting a German Shepherd to her new home. When asked about Smokey being a mix, the volunteer replied, "I thought Smokey was a German Shepherd dressed as a Heinz 57 for Halloween." The volunteer scooped up Smokey and continued on his long drive to place Kerri the GS in her forever home. Smokey loved the long ride, food and attention. He got along well with Kerri during their trip in a confined car.

Smokey is approximately 1 year old, probably a mix of Lab, Dobie, Great Dane, and/or Rottie but his loveable happy go lucky personality is definitely Lab. He just wants to be loved by everyone. He is so friendly and wags his tail whenever he sees anyone walk by.

After getting to know Smokey better over the weeks, his special angel walked him almost daily. He would walk on the horse trails to visit all his new friends. He especially liked his farm animal friends and would give kisses thru the fence to donkeys, horses and dogs. He would seek out everyone along the trail for a pet on the head. He always has a smile on his face and is a very happy boy. Smokey is primarily black, with brindle coloring on his nose legs and paws, with a couple of touches of white on his chest.

We suspect Smokey's beginning's in life were not pleasant. When found, he had large puncture wounds on the side of his neck and assorted scabs and other scars on his head, all of which have healed. We're not sure if he was loose as a result of the Southern California wildfires, or just a stray that someone dumped. Either way, our volunteer knew that he could not turn his back on this poor animal.

Update
Smokey had the opportunity to go to an adoption event at the Irvine Shelter. When mingling with other dogs and guests, Smokey would lay down with his front legs crossed. Small dogs would walk by and Smokey was such a good boy. Smokey was allowed to stay at the Irvine Shelter in hopes of getting more exposure and a forever home. The report is that he's a very smart boy that is very active. He loves to play fetch and adores his kong toy. He has a 7 month old friend he plays with at the Shelter. The problem is he's getting tired of living in a dog run and is extremely bored. He desperately needs a home or a foster home ASAP.

Please consider Smokey if you are looking to adopt. If you are interested in meeting him, please contact JOHNANDEBHANCOCK@aol.com or call 714-993-9594.
